4 lakh beggars in India, West Bengal tops with 81,000

According to figures released by the Government, of the 4 lakh beggars in the country, West Bengal has the most number of beggars, while Lakshadweep has the least, with only 2. The study says 2,21, 673 beggars are males, with the rest being females. Amongst the Union Territories, New Delhi has 2187, and Chandigarh homes 121. Begging is a crime and can be punished with 10 years, although the law is rarely enforced.
