An 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit northern Peru on Sunday without any immediate reports of injuries or damage. The epicenter was at a depth of 110 kilometers. Most of the big quakes in South America occur at a maximum depth of 70 kilometers. The latest quake struck at 07:41 GMT around 75 kilometers southeast of Lagunas, along the Amazon basin near the border with Brazil. Peru is located in a seismically active region.
