A Bosnian Muslim woman who was raped by a Bosnian Serbian soldier in 1993 served as a precedent, enabling victims of sexual violence to request compensation worldwide under global torture legislation. The UN has instructed Bosnia to compensate and to establish a national system for the reparation of war crimes. The UN states that during the Bosnian war in the 90s, minimum 20,000 women were exposed to sexual violence.
