What Paleontologists call the Permian-Triassic mass extinction or “the Great Dying" in general, involved the mass extinction of 96% of all life in the oceans and nearly 70% of all land life. Volcanoes poured out an excessive amount of magma for millions of years to cover land equivalent to half of the surface area of the United States. However, scientists believe that it was the burning of fossil fuels that caused the Great Dying.
