China continues drilling in disputed South China Sea amid tensions

While Taiwan and the Philippines continue to raise concerns over increased Chinese activities in the disputed South China Sea region, China continued to drill deep in the South China Sea to retrieve sediment core from the seabed. Chinese scientists are using the “Sea Bull II” drilling system to obtain a sediment core 231 metres long at a depth of 2,060 metres. Meanwhile, a US Navy strike group entered the South China Sea on Sunday.
