In a bid to crush the dissent by pro-democracy voices in Hong Kong, China has given itself veto powers to select lawmakers in the erstwhile autonomous territory. Parliamentary spokesman Wang Chen said the new law includes a "qualification vetting system" that will promote "orderly political participation" and ensure that a "patriotic" government rules the city. Willie Lam said the law will silence the voice of opposition.
