According to the NCHS, overdose rates have been rising since 1999. There were 70,630 fatalities in 2019, and when compared to that year's average, deaths in 2020 climbed by about 30%. Experts pointed to the Covid-19 epidemic as a factor in the increase in overdose deaths in 2020. "Grief, trauma, economic and societal disruption" were all part of the pandemic's aftermath. The Govt. is currently planning to tackle this 'new epidemic'.
