According to research by Paolo Sossi and his group at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, the early environment of earth was as poisonous as that of present-day Venus. Scientists believe that a Mars-sized object collided with the earth and the energy from the collision was enough to liquefy down the early planet's whole mantle. The researchers softened a rock with a 1900°C laser to reproduce the conditions.
