Global methane emissions fell significantly in 2020 but still equaled Europe’s carbon footprint

The coronavirus pandemic that forced the world to go under a months-long lockdown saw global methane emission levels falling significantly. The decline was due to the slump in oil and gas production amid lesser demands. However, it still was equal to the carbon footprint of Europe. As per the International Energy Agency, 70 million metric tons of methane gas were released into the atmosphere in 2020.
