The summer heatwave in 2020 in Siberia triggered an exponential spike in methane gas releases from limestones, perhaps resulting in Earth being assaulted with a methane bomb, raising already rising global temperatures. Since June 2020, researchers have seen an increase in methane content in two areas: the Taymyr Fold Belt and the periphery of the Siberian Platform. This methane concentration had spread throughout the region by 2021.
