Now, 'they' is officially a singular, non-binary pronoun. America's oldest dictionary publisher, Merriam-Webster officially recognized the usage today as it added 533 words to its online dictionary. The recognition of 'they' as a singular, non-gender specific pronoun came as its usage grew in popularity; mainly among people who identify as neither male or female. Almost everyone uses it in casual talks & formal writing.
