A team of Russian scientists led by Stanislav Filatov has discovered a mineral that can possibly be used as a cathode in rechargeable batteries. The scientists found the mineral in Tolbachik, a volcanic complex on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russia. They have named the mineral ‘Petrovite’ after the name of Tomas Petrov, a renowned crystallographer and Professor at St Petersburg University.
