In November this year, the International Space Station will be able to taste a bit spicier foods. Researchers will send up Española chili pepper plants (Capsicum annuum) which could make peppers US astronauts’ first space-grown fruit. Española peppers were chosen because they grow at high altitudes with short growing periods and can be easily pollinated. This is really important for NASA’s plan to send humans to Mars.
