Netherlands to ban cyclists from using mobile phones

Netherlands, which has more bikes than people, will extend its existing 2002 ban on use of mobile phones while driving a car or lorry to include bicycles as well . The law, needed due to increasing use of smartphones while driving and occurrence of less serious accidents, will take effect next July and ensure safety for cyclist and pedestrians. People aged 12-25 using smartphones caused 1 in 5 bike accidents in 2017.
