While working on a study of the neural underpinnings of a specific locomotor ability in animals, including sideways movements, researchers identified a specific neuron. The study sheds new light on the role of a specific neuron in the brainstem, the Chx10 neurons that allow mice and most likely other animals with limbs to turn left or right while moving. It shows how the neurons generate command from the brain.
