The beaches of Otago in southern part of New Zealand turned blood red as millions of squat lobsters died due to mass stranding. Locals in small coastal communities of Broad Bay, Edwards Bay saw whole swaths of coastline saturated in red tinge produced by the corpses of munida gregaria. This year locals have reported several beaches turning red as adult squat lobsters are refusing to leave breeding ground on seafloor.
