The oldest solar observatory in the Americas, the 2,300-year-old archaeological ruin Chankillo, has been designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. Chankillo, located in a desert valley in northern Peru, was one of 13 new worldwide cultural monuments added to the list. Iván Ghezzi, the Chankillo program director, was 'very thrilled' by the honor, but not shocked that Chankillo was included on the list.
