A bench of Supreme Court Justices L Nageswara Rao and Indira Banerjee held that selection for public jobs should be strictly on the basis of merit. The Apex court said appointing people with lesser merit while ignoring those having higher marks, is a violation of the Constitution. The SC said this while upholding an order of the Jharkhand High Court which allowed the appointment of 43 persons for post of Police Sub-Inspectors on merit.
