Spain's defense ministry has opened more special forces positions to women complying with international efforts of tackling terrorism. The UN has urged for more women to be deployed to resolve conflicts worldwide. Arabic-speaking women are given preference for UN or Nato-led missions in Iraq or Libya. Since 1999 the proportion of women in Spanish armed forces has increased to 12.7%, above the Nato average of 11.1%.
