Tanzania-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, who has penned several bestselling novels including Memory of Departure and Afterlives, has won the Nobel prize in literature. Gurnah was given the prize for his “uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents”. He grew up in Zanzibar, an island in Tanzania and has written 10 novels.
