A United States Defence official said the country's forces in Syria were fighting what's left of the Islamic State terrorist group and not protecting the oil fields as previously ordered by former President Donald Trump. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said US military personnel and contractors in the region "are not authorized to provide assistance to any other private company" developing oil resources in the country.
