A California woman lost a lawsuit that she had filed against a diet soda brand alleging that she was misled that it would help her lose weight, but it clearly didn't. 3 judges from a California appeals court rejected the case and ruled that diet soda doesn't claim to aid weight loss. As per the judgement, the prevalent understanding of the term is that the diet version of a soft drink has fewer calories than its regular one.
