Wildlife researchers have unearthed the cause of the death of hundreds of elephants in Botswana since May. According to the researchers, the elephants died after drinking water that got contaminated with toxic cyanobacteria or blue-green algae. The toxins in the algae can affect both animals as well as humans and can cause gastrointestinal problems, paralysis, or even death. The bacteria is formed in water due to excessive heat.
