Scientists led by Dr Alan Jamieson have recorded the deepest ever sighting of an octopus on the Indian Ocean floor. It was seen 7,000m down in the Java Trench, that’s almost 2km deeper than the earlier reliable recording. Researchers claim it's a species of ‘Dumbo’ octopus. The name is an ode to the popular ear-like fins just above these animals' eyes making them look like the 1940s famous Disney cartoon character.
