Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said in her New Year's speech on Friday that she was ready for "meaningful" talks with China as equals. The offer was rejected by China. China's Taiwan Affairs Office maintained that the island was a part of China and accused the government in Taiwan of engaging in a "cheap trick". China said Taiwan was provoking China by seeking independence and "confronting the mainland at every turn" since 2016.
