Ex-Union Minister Arif Mohammed backed PM Modi’s comment that it was PV Narasimha Rao who said, “it wasn't the Congress' duty to uplift Muslims & if they want to lie in gutter let them be.” Khan said Rao’s comments came in an effort to persuade him after he resigned from Cabinet after the Shah Bano episode. Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi has said that if Muslims are living in the gutter then they must be pulled out of it.
