Palestinian president announces first elections in more than 15 years

In a significant step, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has announced the first Palestinian elections in more than 15 years. Palestinians will vote for the President post on July 31. Legislative polls will be held on May 22. The last time Palestinians voted was in 2005 and Mahmud Abbas was elected with 62 percent votes. Abbas replaced the late Yasser Arafat. The support of Palestinians is split between two factions.
