Several requests by the United States to speak to Aung San Suu Kyi were turned down by Myanmar's military government. "We stand with the people of Burma and support their right to assemble peacefully, including to protest peacefully in support of the democratically elected government," said State Department spokesman Ned Price. Price added that Washington made formal and informal requests to meet Aung San Suu Kyi.
