Roger Federer had to save two match points to see off Gael Monfils and enter the Madrid Open quarterfinals. However, women’s world no.1 and top seed Naomi Osaka was thrown out in a last-eight shock by Federer’s Swiss compatriot Belinda Bencic. The Swiss star, appearing only in his second match of a 2019 return to clay after 3 years’ absence, needed two hours to defeat French power-hitter Monfils 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3).
