Jinder Mahal defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to retain his WWE Championship title at the WWE pay-per-view SummerSlam 2017. For Mahal, it was his 3rd title defence match in a pay-per-view event since May, becoming the 50th WWE Champion and 1st of the Indian origin. Mahal's win came as a surprise as Nakamura was being considered as the favorite among the two.
