Joe Root returned to his best as he and Rory Burns scored centuries but the second Test against New Zealand still remains in balance after day 3. Root made a composed 114 not out off 278 balls - his first Test hundred in 15 innings - as England ended the day on 269-5, trailed by 106. Captain Root pulled off a 177-run partnership with opener Burns who scored his second Test century before being run out for 101.
