Chad is a large landlocked country that stretches across north-central Africa. It has a total area of 1,284,000 square kilometres. Chad is slightly smaller than Peru and slightly larger than South Africa in terms of size. Chad gained independence on August 11, 1960, with the PPT's leader, François Tombalbaye, an ethnic Sara, serving as the country's first president. Tombalbaye banned opposition parties and instituted a one-party system two years later.
