On September 26, 1999, India faced Hansie Cronje's South African team in the first game of the LG Cup series. After winning the toss, Cronje's team batted first, but their innings was marred by the bowling of left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi. The slow left-arm orthodox ran past South Africa's top order, reducing them to 45/4 and then to 85/7 before being dismissed for 117. India won the game by 8 wickets after successfully chasing down the target in 22.4 overs, led by Ajay Jadeja.
