Ian Michael Chappell (born September 26, 1943) is a former South Australian and Australian cricketer. Between 1971 and 1975, he captained Australia before becoming a key figure in the breakaway World Series Cricket organisation. Born into a cricketing family (his grandfather and brother both captained Australia), Chappell began his international career as a right-handed middle-order batsman and spin bowler. When he was promoted to bat third, he found his niche. He rose to prominence as one of the game's greatest captains, earning the nickname "Chappelli."
