The Mughal Empire spanned nearly one million square kilometres at the time of Akbar's death in 1556. Then, on November 5,1556, Humayun succeeded his father as ruler of the Mughal territories in the Indian subcontinent. When Humayun came to power at the age of 22, he was an inexperienced ruler.
