(Madras Day) 1639 – Madras (now Chennai), India, is founded by the British East India Company on a sliver of land bought from local Nayak rulers.
The East India Company purchased some land along the coast on August 22, 1639, and that's when Madras was established. Madraspatnam was the name given to Chennai, which was situated in Tondaimandalam between Cuddalore and Nellore, on the Pennar River. The empires of the Chola, Pallava, Pandiya, and Vijaynagar have formerly dominated this region.
