Dr. Verghese Kurien was born on November 26, 1921, in Calicut, Kerala, to an aristocratic Syrian Christian family. Years later, seeing these people's struggle for survival and being captivated by the personality of their leader Tribhuvandas Patel, who was attempting to unite the farmers and establish a cooperative movement against exploitation, Dr. Kurien left his government job and joined forces with Tribhuvandas Patel and the farmers to launch the Milk Cooperative movement in the region, which was registered under the name Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd (KDCMPUL).
