In 1920, German citizen Hans Riegel of Bonn founded his own confectionery business. He was tired of his unfulfilling job as a confectionery worker. The recipe wasn't entirely his own invention, but he did perfect it. They draw influence from Japanese rice candies and Turkish delight.

Sea lampreys suck their victim dry, their keen tongue piercing through the host's skin and scales. Because of the suction-cup capacity of their jaws, they remain connected to their prey. The prey is further rendered immobile by an enzyme secreted by the sea lamprey that serves as an anticoagulant to prevent blood clots and maintain a constant flow.

When our airways are too small to allow the air to leave our lungs quickly enough, we develop asthma, and wheezing is the result of the air becoming turbulent when it is expelled too quickly. The ancient Indians employed four methods to calculate the duration of a year: 'Nakshatra,' 'Savana,' 'Lunar,' and 'Saura.' Saura was one tropical zodiac-based technique for defining the seasons: equinoxes, solstices, year half, and months in connection to the (six) seasons. Saura calculates the length of a year to be exactly 365 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 30 seconds.

Daniel Peter, a Swiss chocolatier and entrepreneur, spent eight years attempting to perfect a milk chocolate formula. It wasn't until 1875 that he recognized condensed milk was the solution to all of his problems. We're delighted Daniel didn't give up!

MIND THE GAP! That’s the gap between when there was a British Museum tube station and now. The photos above (courtesy of London Transport Museum) show the entrance to the Museum’s underground station in 1921, some gentlemen waiting on the platform in 1903 (with some fabulous hats!), and its construction in 1898. The station opened in 1900 but was closed in September 1933 when the new Holborn station opened, less than 100 yards away.

This is a fun fact about Spain and Spaniards. You can easily spot Spaniards anywhere because they are the ones that speak in the loudest voice. It is part of the Spanish character and it is something that contributes to creating that special atmosphere.

Females tend to live longer than males, and they also mature sexually more quickly. Within the first year of life, male and female round stingrays, a species known for their rapid growth, reach 58% and 70% of their entire size, respectively. Males only live five to seven years on average, while females live an average of 15 to 22 years.

According to Alzheimer's Orange County, "as the size and proportion of the U.S. population 65 and older continue to expand, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias will climb each year." The number of persons with Alzheimer's and other dementias is predicted to increase by more than 40% from 2015 to 7.1 million by 2025. With an estimated 13.8 million, this will almost triple by 2050.

One of our favourite amusing facts about Poland is that it is home to the world's first upside down house. The topsy-turvy wooden home was erected upside down in a forest and appears to be something out of a storybook. Visitors must enter the home through the attic windows and may walk around the furnished interior, which is evocative of Communist Poland in the 1970s, to symbolise how Communist control turned life in Poland upside down. Hundreds of interested visitors have visited the home since its unveiling in 2007, and it is located in the little Polish town of Szymbark, which has a population of roughly 500 people.

When developers purchase property from the Chinese government, they are required to build on it immediately. Of course, there aren't always purchasers for these hurriedly built projects, resulting in the uniquely Chinese phenomena of ghost cities. The ghost cities provide an intriguing and unsettling view into China's commodity housing industry, with completely vacant high rises and motorways that appear like a director's vision of the world post-zombie apocalypse.

Some of the smallest insects are fairy wasps. Their size can vary from 0.02 to 0.03 in (0.5- 1.0 mm). With a length of only 0.006 inches, Dicopomorpha echmepterygis, the tiniest known insect, belongs to the Mymaridae family (0.13 mm). Kikiki huna, the tiniest flying creature, is a fairyfly as well and measures only 0.006 in (0.15 mm) in length.
