In the Brazilian Amazon, researchers studied the behaviour of 15 groups of two monkey species: pied tamarins and red-handed tamarins. Primates have a number of “calls” they use to communicate with each other. They discovered that the red-handed tamarins adapted the sounds of their shared region's neighbours. “You need a call the other species can understand so that you can regulate territorial disputes,” researchers explained.
