Giant pandas are no longer endangered, according to Chinese officials. Cui Shuhong, head of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment's Department of Natural Ecological Protection, stated during a news conference on Wednesday that the species will be reclassified as vulnerable. Pandas are recognised in China as an umbrella species, as researchers think that protecting them will help preserve other species and the environment as a whole.
