American astronomers felt that communication with extraterrestrial civilizations could be possible. The next step in this search is to seek gases in the atmospheres of planets that indicate life and are all generated by microbes. The discovery of phosphine (created by microbes) in the atmosphere of Venus was a promising lead, but it now appears to be in doubt, as research suggests the signal might have been sulfur dioxide rather than phosphine.
