The 61 human remains discovered in the Nile Valley in what is now Sudan in the 1960s have long been recognised as the earliest evidence of human organised combat. They were slain in intermittent and repeated warfare that lasted many years and was likely sparked by climatic changes at the time, which caused opposing groups in the area to battle for food and resources.
