In a first, India to cultivate Heeng domestically to cut imports

Heeng (asafoetida) is an important ingredient in Indian kitchens and is used for cooking as well as health purposes. However, what you might not know is that India imports Heeng from Afghanistan and Iran, and doesn't produce it here. This is now going to change as CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology has found a way to cultivate heeng in the country, starting from cold regions such as Ladakh and Lahaul-Spiti.
