Over 16 lakh acres of elephant habitat lost to development in western ghats

A study has shown that over 16 lakh acres of elephant habitat have been lost to agriculture, infrastructure development and other activities in the Western Ghats, which comes under states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The study shows that the habitat is nearly 10 times the current size of Bengaluru City. Deforestation has been the main reason for the massive loss of land which has happened over a period of 44 years.
