What is Favipiravir and why it may treat coronavirus?

Indian pharmaceutical company Strides Pharma Science Ltd on Thursday said that it has received approval from the Drug Controller General of India to conduct clinical trials of favipiravir. Favipiravir is an antiviral drug used for treating influenza in Japan. The drug was approved in 2014. It is an anti-viral agent that selectively and potently inhibits the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of RNA viruses.
