According to a study conducted by Australia's national science agency, over 14 million tonnes of microplastics float on the world's sea floor, affecting marine life adversely. A robotic submarine was used by the researchers at CSIRO to collect samples from sites up to 3,000 metres (9,850 feet) deep, off the South Australian coast. Microplastics are formed after the deterioration and breaking down of plastic waste.
