The Battle of Gaugamela, also known as the Battle of Arbela, took place on October 1, 331 BCE, and was the final encounter between Alexander the Great of Macedon and King Darius III of Persia. After this conquest, Alexander was unquestionably crowned King of Asia. Gaugamela was a hamlet on the banks of the Bumodus River. Potti Sri Ramulu, a major leader of the independent Andhra movement, began an indefinite fast on October 19, 1952, seeking a separate Andhra state from Madras for the Telugus. Potti Sri Ramulu took his last breath at the fasting camp on December 15. As word of his death spread, rioting erupted across the country's south. As a result of Potti Sri Ramulu's sacrifice, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru established the state of Andhra, which included eleven districts in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, on October 1, 1953, with Kurnool serving as its capital city.
