Potti Sri Ramulu, a major leader of the independent Andhra movement, began an indefinite fast on October 19, 1952, seeking a separate Andhra state from Madras for the Telugus. Potti Sri Ramulu took his last breath at the fasting camp on December 15. As word of his death spread, rioting erupted across the country's south. As a result of Potti Sri Ramulu's sacrifice, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru established the state of Andhra, which included eleven districts in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, on October 1, 1953, with Kurnool serving as its capital city.
