The United States military forces killed Iran Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani and deputy chief of Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary force in a missile attack in Baghdad. The US Defense Department Pentagon said General Soleimani was planning to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and neighbouring countries. Pentagon revealed that President Donald Trump gave the orders for the strike.
