While the New Zealand parliament agreed that China was conducting severe human rights abuses against the Uighurs in the Xinjiang region, it refrained from calling it a genocide. ACT party deputy chief Brooke van Velden said she had to use the phrase "severe human rights abuses" instead of 'genocide' to get the approval of the ruling Labour Party. The Chinese embassy in Wellington is yet to speak on the matter.
